University of San Diego

The University of San Diego is a Roman Catholic university located 2 miles (about a 15 minute drive) north of downtown San Diego.

This 180 acre campus encompasses more than 2 million square feet where it sits on a mesa that overlooks

Linda Vista as well as distance glimpses of other parts of San Diego County,

and Tecolote Canyon and Mission Bay.

USD offers more than 60 degrees at bachelor's, mastor's and doctoral levels.

The college consists of 6 schools: School of Nursing and Health; The Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies (before she and her husband passed away they owned the Padres Baseball Franchise. Her husband was also the founder of the fast food chain - MacDonald's Corporation); School of Business Administration; College of Arts and Sciences; School of Law; and School of Leadership and Education Sciences.

The University sits in an area of land known as Alcala Park. The park is named after San Diego de Alcala, a Franciscan lay brother who was from Alcala de Henares, a town near Madrid, Spain.

Saint Didacus of Alcala, Saint Diego - or more familiarly San Diego, was in the order of Friars Minor.

He was born to poor parents who, when he was a small child, gave him to a hermit who lived near San Nicolas del Puerto, where he was born. He spent his life serving God.

He died at Alcala de Henares, Spain, on November 12, 1463 and was canonized in 1588.

In 1945, The Most Reverand Charles F. Buddy, the First Biship of the Diocese of San Diego and Mother Rosalie Hill, Superior Vicar of the Society of the Sacred Heart, envisioned building two institutions of higher education on this beautiful hilltop of Alcala Park.

The school was chartered in 1949.

The first students arrived in February 1952 to attend the San Diego College for Women. There were 50 female students.

The School of Law with 60 men in attendance and The San Diego College for Men, with 39 students, opened it's doors in September of 1954.

These two schools merged together in 1972 to become the University of San Diego.

The Univerisidad De Alcala de Henares in Spain was the architectural model that the founders chose to use for the University of San Diego.

The buildings on the campus of USD are designed in 16th century Spanish Renaissance.

They are very amazing, breathtaking, stunning architecture. A very beautiful campus.

The university is no longer goverened directly by the Diocese of San Diego although the Bishop of San Diego has a seat as a permanent member of the trustees and the school is still designated as Catholic.

The Immaculate Church still serves the college and the surrounding neighborhood.

The campus contains educational, residential, athletic, dining, administrative, support and athletic services in it's buildings.

Students as well as professors alike choose to live on campus.

The college is grounded in it's Catholic traditions of faith, thought and action.

However, all faiths may attend.
