Sunset Cliffs Natural Park was dedicated in 1983. It is a 68 acre resource park with a 50 acre hillside section. It links at the north end to the 640 acre Point Loma Ecological Reserve. The hillside section has intricately carved coastal bluffs, arches and seaside caves. From December through March is whale watching season and from the cliffs you can see the California Grey Whales migrating from the Bering Sea to Baja California.
You can park your car and walk or bike along numerous paths. There are a couple of secluded beaches which have some steep stairs that lead down to them. You do need to be careful if you decide to go to the beach areas as some can be very treacherous and many people have been hurt going down to them. Do not try to climb up the cliffs as quite a few people have lost their lives trying to. These beaches are not a place you want to take small children as the tide can be dangerous. The area is popular with surfers, though. I love driving along Sunset Cliffs Boulevard because the ocean scenary is spectacular. There is also an area for about 50 guests if you decide to have a wedding there.
Everywhere you look is an opportunity for some gorgeous photography.
And the homes along Sunset Cliffs Blvd. -- they are breathtaking also. Can you imagine living in a house like this and having a panoramic view of the ocean every single day?
